Creating a heart-shaped coaster is a fun and meaningful DIY project that adds a touch of love to your home. Whether you’re making it as a thoughtful gift or a charming addition to your table setting, this project is simple and rewarding. Follow the steps below to sew your very own heart coaster!

For one coaster you will need:

  • 2 squares of cotton fabric (15×15 cm / 6×6 inches) – for the front and back
  • 1 square of cotton fabric (10×10 cm / 4×4 inches) – for the heart
  • Foam padding (15×15 cm / 6×6 inches, up to 0.2 inches thick)
  • 1 strip of cotton fabric (4×55 cm / 1.5×22 inches)
  • Heart template from cardboard (for cutting the shape)
  • Some black thread for embroidery and an embroidery needle

Step 1: Prepare the Front Fabric and Foam – Place the front fabric over the foam layer.

Step 2: Stepping Stitching – Sew parallel quilting lines with a spacing of 3 cm (1.2”). Repeat in the perpendicular direction to create a grid pattern.

Step 3: Draw the Heart Shape – Sketch a heart shape onto the quilted fabric and leave a 1.5 cm (0.6”) seam allowance.

Step 4: Sew Along the Heart Shape – Stitch along the drawn heart line, inserting a slightly smaller cardboard heart inside to maintain shape.

Step 5: Press the Heart – Iron the heart to smooth out the fabric and create crisp edges.

Step 6: Attach the Heart to the Center – Sew the heart in the middle of the coaster using fine hand stitches.

Step 7: Add the Backing Fabric – Place the back fabric under the front and…

… trim excess fabric to create a perfect square.

Step 8: Attach the Border Strip – Align a fabric strip along the edges and stitch it along the entire perimeter.

Step 9: Fold and Secure the Border – Fold the strip to the back, then fold it inward once more. Use clips to hold it in place.

Step 10: Final Sewing Step – Sew along the seam between the fabrics with a sewing machine to hide the stitching. Your coaster is now complete!
