Learn How to Create a Stunning Braided Panel for Your Tote Bag!

In this blog post, I’ll show you how to make the eye-catching woven section of a tote bag using folded fabric strips. This technique creates a beautiful zigzag pattern that adds a unique touch to any bag.

Cut 20 strips measuring from each of the two different fabric patterns.

Fold the strip inward and press the strip.

Use the iron-on double-sided tape.

Place it inside the strip, close the strip, and press it.

Place the thin fusible interfacing on a surface suitable for ironing and lay the first strip diagonally as shown in the image.

Lay the strips in alternating colors. Trim the strips if necessary to fill the corners.

Pull one strip through in the horizontal direction. This strip should always be woven through two vertical strips.

The goal of the pattern is for each fabric color to create a zigzag design. Take a second dark strip and form the zigzag with the dark fabric. Once you have placed the strip correctly, continue weaving it through two strips at a time.

Now continue with the light strip in alternating order. Here you build the zigzag pattern of the light fabric.

Materials Needed

  • Fabric in four different colors or prints

  • Rotary cutter and ruler

  • Cutting mat

  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

  • Iron and ironing board

Continue with the dark fabric, and so on in alternating order.

Trim the edges so that a piece measuring  is created.
