Sewing a Charming House-Shaped Cup Coaster – A Beautiful DIY Project
There’s something special about handmade home decor, and today, we’re creating an adorable house-shaped cup coaster. Made from natural linen, this coaster is both stylish and practical—perfect for adding a cozy, rustic touch to your table. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sewist, this project is a fun and simple way to create something unique!
A Design Full of Charm
This coaster isn’t just practical—it’s a tiny house that brings warmth to any space! Linen gives it a natural and timeless look, making it an elegant addition to your home. The stitched details add character, and the soft fabric makes it perfect for protecting your surfaces from heat or spills. Whether you place it on a coffee table, a kitchen counter, or gift it to a friend, this handmade coaster is sure to bring a smile.
You will need:
• 2 squares of cotton or linen fabric 18×16 cm (7″x6.3″) – for the front and back
• 1 piece of cotton fabric 16×7 cm (6.3″x2.8″) – roof of the house
• 1 piece of cotton fabric 5×11 cm (2″x4.3″) – chimney of the house
• 1 piece of cotton fabric 5×7 cm (2″x2.8″) – front door
• Some matching thread for embroidery and an embroidery needle

Step 1: Creating the Roof
The first part of the house we’ll sew is the roof. Take a fabric strip and place it on a rectangular piece of linen.

Sew the two together to create the roof section. This will give your coaster a lovely contrast and help define the house shape.

Step 2: Shaping the House
Next, we move on to the walls. Take another rectangular linen piece.

Shape the top corners into a roofline by trimming off the upper edges. This will form the characteristic house silhouette.

Step 3: Assembling the House & Adding the Chimney
Now, it’s time to put everything together! Before sewing the front and back pieces together, don’t forget to attach the chimney. Position a small fabric strip at the top of the roof and secure it in place.

Once that’s done, sew the front and back pieces together, leaving a small opening on one side.
Step 4: Turning & Pressing
Turn the coaster right side out through the opening. Use a point turner or a blunt tool to gently push out the corners and edges. Then, press the coaster with an iron to give it a crisp, finished look.

Step 5: Adding the Door with Hand-Stitching Details
Now for the charming final touches! Cut a small fabric rectangle for the door and place it on the house. To make it even more special, use a fabric marker or chalk to draw vertical stripes.

Then hand-stitch over them to create beautiful texture and depth. This little detail adds a handmade feel and makes your coaster stand out. Also stitch a decorative line at the top under the blanket by hand.

Step 6: Finishing Touches
Finally, close the opening with an invisible stitch or a small topstitch, and your house-shaped cup coaster is complete!
