Sew a Beautiful Quilted Hexagon Coaster – A Quick & Creative Project

If you’re looking for a fun and satisfying sewing project that’s perfect for using up fabric scraps, you’re in the right place! In this blog post, I’ll show you how to make a stunning hexagon-shaped coaster using a clever folding technique inspired by traditional quilting.

This project is beginner-friendly, quick to complete, and makes a lovely handmade gift — or a cozy little treat for your own home. You’ll find the step-by-step process below, along with helpful photos and tips.

Let’s get started and bring some quilting joy to your sewing table!

Cut out four hexagon shapes and one strip.

Fold three of the cut-out hexagons in the middle and press them. Make sure to fold the two straight edges together, as shown in the picture.

Place the folded hexagons onto the fourth remaining hexagon.

Topstitch along the edge of the hexagon to hold all the pieces together.

Fold each of the three sides forward one by one and press them.

Now the edges of the hexagon will be finished with a fabric strip measuring To do this, first stitch the strip along the edge. After that fold the strip over to the other side, where it will be folded inward in the next step and secured with a clip.

While the written instructions cover all the steps, the video helps bring the process to life — especially for the folding technique used in this project.

Watching the tutorial can make things clearer by:

  • showing how each fold and layer is placed in real time

  • helping you understand the proportions and fabric movement

  • letting you pause and replay details at your own pace

  • providing small tips and techniques that are easier to demonstrate than explain

If you’re more of a visual learner, the video might be the easiest way to follow along. Feel free to sew with me as you watch — and enjoy the process.

A handmade fabric coaster like this one is more versatile than it might seem. Of course, it’s perfect for your morning coffee or afternoon tea — but it can also be used in other thoughtful and practical ways:

  • as a small resting spot for candles, jars, or mini vases

  • as a soft base for protecting delicate surfaces

  • as part of a gift set with a mug or homemade treats

  • as a table accent — mix and match fabrics for different seasons

  • as a decorative element in a sewing or craft room

Whether you’re keeping it for yourself or giving it as a gift, this quilted coaster is a small but meaningful addition to any space.
