DIY Fabric Basket – A Creative Upcycling Project!

Looking for a fun and practical sewing project? This DIY fabric basket is not only stylish but also a great way to upcycle old clothes!  Instead of throwing away worn-out fabrics, turn them into a beautiful and functional basket that you can use for storage, home decor, or even as a gift basket.

The Perfect Fabrics for This Project

For the best results, I recommend using slightly thicker fabrics, such as:
Old jeans – Durable and structured, perfect for giving the basket a firm shape.
Linen – Adds a beautiful texture and enhances the 3D effect of the patchwork technique.
Canvas or thicker cotton fabrics – Great for structure and stability.

What You’ll Learn in This Blog

In this post, I’ll show you a unique patchwork technique that creates a stunning effect on the surface of the basket. This method works especially well with linen and other structured fabrics, making the design stand out even more!

Want to Make the Full Basket?

While I explain the patchwork technique here in the blog, the full basket-making process is best seen in action! That’s why I’ve put together a step-by-step video tutorial, where you’ll learn how to sew the entire basket from start to finish.

Watch the video below and start sewing your own fabric basket today!

Cut three strips of fabric. In my project, I’m using linen from an old blouse.

Fold the strip in half and press it firmly with an iron.

Use a foam interfacing. Place two strips of thin cotton fabric in the center. You can also use different fabric patterns here for a unique look.

Next, take one of the previously ironed strips and place it in the center of the cotton fabric strip.

And finally, place the third strip next to it.

Pin all the strips in place. Then, draw a line in the center of each strip.

Sew along the drawn line in the center of each strip.

Next, draw vertical lines along the three strips.

Sew along the drawn lines.

Work on each square individually and open the « windows » by folding the inner edges to the sides. Then, carefully press with an iron to ensure that the folded-out fabric stays in place and does not fold back inward.

Continue working through the remaining squares in the same way.

The folded-out edges are now secured with an invisible stitch.
